Fatty McGehee traded to Pirates

Brewers trade McGehee for Veras
By Tom Haudricourt

Third baseman Casey McGehee, who lost his position with the Brewers when they agreed to terms earlier today on a three-year deal with veteran free-agent Aramis Ramirez, has been traded to Pittsburgh for reliever Jose Veras.

With the Brewers in pursuit of Ramirez for several days, some thought McGehee might be moved across the diamond to first base, especially with Prince Fielder on his way out as a free agent. But McGehee also was arbitration-eligible for the first time, guaranteeing a big boost in his $478,000 salary.

That salary probably no longer fit in the Brewers’ plans with the signing of Ramirez and the recent decision by reliever Francisco Rodriguez to accept salary arbitration.

McGehee led the Brewers with 104 runs batted in during the 2010 season and seemingly had a hold on third base. He fell off significantly last season, however, batting .223 with 13 home runs and 67 RBI, and also slipped in the field, committing 20 errors.

McGehee slumped so badly that he was replaced in the postseason by utility player Jerry Hairston Jr., who since has signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers as a free agent.

Veras, 31, is a six-year major-leaguer who has pitched for the New York Yankees, Cleveland Indians, Florida Marlins and Pittsburgh Pirates. Last season in Pittsburgh, he was 2-4 with a 3.80 ERA in 79 appearances, with 54 hits and 34 walks in 71 innings, and 79 strikeouts.

Veras is arbitration-eligible but I haven't been able to find what his salary was in 2011.

This Braun thing must have Melvin on the ledge. He's like a recovering alcoholic who just had a traumatic life event cause him to fall back off the wagon. He's signing 33 year olds to multi-year deals, now he's back to selling guys at their lowest possible value. Where's his sponsor?

I don't think McGehee is going to be like Hardy.

I think this was a good move. Fatty was going to make quite a bit more money if offered arbitration. The Brewers didn't have a spot for him anymore, and they added a decent BP arm too.

Agreed. McGehee was in line to make $3 mill, and now he became a decent BP arm. Only at a cheaper rate. Nice move Melvin. Especially since we lost out on Saito.

Speaking of which.....wonder if Hawkins get signed now?

Dumbest fucking post of the day(that I've read).

1-We were in discussions and interested in Aram BEFORE this happened.
2-Did you see or do you know DICK about the guy we got for McGehee?
3-Do you realize that it was almost a given they were going to non-tender him?

So instead we get a guy who had a 3.50 FIP, throws in the mid 90's, and all for a guy who we were NOT going to pay 2-3 million dollars for.

End result.

1-We get one of the top remaining available bats on the market.
2-We get a very good 7th inning guy who can throw 96-97 to help replace the bullpen losses.

And yes, it's a "terrible deal," and OBVIOUSLY a knee jerk reaction to Braun which I think most of us would agree had nothing to do with this at all.

There isn't a single thing in his history to suggest he will be. Even at his worst Hardy was valuable because of his defense.

We basically just signed a "bad" JJ Hardy to solidify the SS position with great defense.

Aram's D is also much better. The Pitching just by virtue of those two moves should be much improved.

We'll see what Caleb Gindl/Logan Schafer give us the first 50 games.

Sorry Fan, but Aram's d isn't much better. He might be slightly better, but not by much. All metrics have him as declining fast, and the eye test to most people say he isn't very good either.

Hearing [Casey] McGehee will enter spring training at 208 pounds, down from 231 at end of 2011, cut body fat in half.

Damnit Casey, not you decide not to be fat.

One of the things college will teach you(well, hell, 3rd grade should have) is that you don't make an argument by telling me what others MIGHT say or think about a particular move/trade.

Based on what?

His height and weight? The absolute most ridiculous way to measure who is overweight and who isn't.

By the by, Rickie Weeks is about 30-40 pounds over weight based on the BMI. I remember wrestling in college, cutting my fucking balls off(not literally, a figurative term) and now since they have minimium body fats you're suppose to be at,or that you're allowed to be at, I had to sign a waiver so that I could go down to 174. I was at about 200-205 in the off-season. Got down to the lowest allowable weight which was 173.4 and was at 4.1 pct body fat.

This is all pre-season stuff. So I had to get a physical, I went to my doctor, he weighed me, I was now at about 180, but he fucker litterally told me my ideal body fat weight was 158. I told him that was bullshit, I had an actual test done to termine my lowest possible body fat. He just shrugged his shoulders and said, "well, according to the BMI we use, you're about 15 pounds overweight at 175.

Just a disagreement with the MNA. Not syying Casey Was't fat.

It also teaches you not to make claims with no evidence given. The fact is, his fielding metrics have been steadily declining the last 4 years. And even talking to Cubs fans, they see a decline defensively.
