Fantasy baseball question on a trade

Postby tonyei31 on Apr 20th, 2010, 3:47 pm

Ok, I am in a 9 team money league. Point systems are pretty square

each base reached: 1/2 point (for example a double is 2 points for the double and 1 point for the 2 bases reached)
1 point:
SB, Walk, Single, Run, RBI
2 points:
double
3 points:
Triple
4 points:
HR
-1 point:
K

My squad is:
C: Victor Martinez
1B:Adrian Gonzalez
2B:Dan Uggla
SS:Erick Aybar
3B:Ryan Zimmermann/Chase Headley
OF:Rajah Davis
OF:Jason Heyward
OF:Matt Holliday
UTIL:Ben Zobrist
UTIL:Kendry Morales/Andrew Mccutchen

Pitchers are: and mind you complete games are worth 20 points, 25 points for a CG shutout, .75 points per out, 1 point per K, -1 point per hit, -1/2 point per walk, -1 point per Earned run

My staff is:
P: Neftali Feliz
SP: Roy Halladay
SP:Jake Peavy
SP:Jered Weaver
"Backups"-Josh Beckett, Matt Cain, Clayton Kershaw
RP:Carlos Marmol
RP:Rafael Soriano

unlimited starts and unlimited innings pitched.

My staff is loaded, no doubt about it. I banked on Halladay getting 6-8 CG's this year so I drafted him 5th over many other 'normal' selections.

I got proposed Jose Reyes for Matt Cain. Do I do the deal banking on Reyes coming back to some of his old form or do I ride it out with Aybar? None of my other players have SS eligibility (unlike my OF where I can also use Chase Headley and Ben Zobrist).

Any thoughts and reasons would be greatly appreciated as I am really pondering it.

Stick with Aybar. You never know when a SP may go down with an injury. Young arms especially of the quality of Cain is worth keeping. Reyes is questionable at best with all the injuries and health issues.

I'd stay with what you have.

You are pretty thin in the SB category plus your pitching staff is pretty damn good even without Cain.

I'd do it. Its worth the risk.

well in my mind I ended up 'doing better'. The guy bit on Peavy for Reyes. We both agree that it is a huge risk both ways but I am not too sold on Peavy.

I don't think I am thin at SB. I have McCutchen who will get me 30, Zobrist will get me a few here and there, same with Holliday and Aybar. Where I make up for it is I have the guy that will lead the league in steals with 70+ this year in Rajah Davis.

Oh. I missed Davis.

Regardless. Peavy instead of Cain is a money deal for you.

yeah I didn't want to give up consistency. Even if Peavy comes back and has a great year the rest of the way I know what I am going to get out of Cain. 7 IP 2-3 ER's, 4-6 k's a walk here and there and durability.

Even if Reyes doesn't come around it's a risk worth taking.

Reyes just tripled in 2 guys vs Zambrano

Speed looks to be there

hopefully that continues. I have a reputation in these leagues as being the 'Billy Beane' type fleece guy. Last year I got Prince for Josh Hamilton straight up. In the NFL part of this a few years back I traded, I believe it was LT (before his major down year) and another WR that had an awful year that year (I forget who it was) and got a AP his rookie year. I got hell for that but at years end it was a great deal.

Nice. Even if Reyes comes down a little hes still a better option than Aybar.

well I ended up getting Reyes today as the deal went through and then I dropped Aybar and added Ben Sheets to my rotation.

Though I was read the riot act from the rest of the league by drafting Roy Halladay #5 overall it seems to be becoming a very good investment. Especially with the fact that the backend of the Phillies BP is shaky. Complete game shutout today (and we get major points for a shutout and a CG).
