Don't worry, it's not going to happen. The Cubs have denied the rumor that they will play in U.S. Cellular Field in 2013 so extensive renovations can be made to Wrigley Field.
NBCChicago has the story, citing a rumor circulating around Wrigleyville that this was a real possibility.
I'm not sure where this rumor came from. This is the first I'm hearing about it and given the way social media has blown up, I'm clearly not alone in that. If by Wrigleyville, do they mean the bars? Was somebody drunk at Sluggers claiming to have inside sources and that this was a real possibility?
If the Cubs did have to do an Extreme Makeover: Wrigley Field edition, it would make a whole lot of sense for the team to play on Chicago's South Side, even though almost every hardcore Chicagoan would be against that in some way, shape or form.
"I have never heard of a done deal of moving home games to the 'Cell,'" Dennis Culloton, a spokesman for the Ricketts family, said in the article.
Phew. Guess it was just a rumor, then.
The Cubs very well may have to undergo a major renovation sometime down the road, but hopefully it will be something that can be fixed over the fall or winter. It's not like Wrigley Field is used to hosting playoff games deep into October, ya know?
