Rumor killed about Cubs playing at the Cell in '13

Postby Indianplaya17 on Feb 14th, 2012, 1:17 am

Don't worry, it's not going to happen. The Cubs have denied the rumor that they will play in U.S. Cellular Field in 2013 so extensive renovations can be made to Wrigley Field.

NBCChicago has the story, citing a rumor circulating around Wrigleyville that this was a real possibility.

I'm not sure where this rumor came from. This is the first I'm hearing about it and given the way social media has blown up, I'm clearly not alone in that. If by Wrigleyville, do they mean the bars? Was somebody drunk at Sluggers claiming to have inside sources and that this was a real possibility?

If the Cubs did have to do an Extreme Makeover: Wrigley Field edition, it would make a whole lot of sense for the team to play on Chicago's South Side, even though almost every hardcore Chicagoan would be against that in some way, shape or form.

"I have never heard of a done deal of moving home games to the 'Cell,'" Dennis Culloton, a spokesman for the Ricketts family, said in the article.

Phew. Guess it was just a rumor, then.

The Cubs very well may have to undergo a major renovation sometime down the road, but hopefully it will be something that can be fixed over the fall or winter. It's not like Wrigley Field is used to hosting playoff games deep into October, ya know?

Interesting. I'm all for it if it means the grandstand is redone.

It's 2012...you don't need obstructions anymore. Make every seat at least 80% clear view. Some of those seats are just awful.

what is wrong with playing at cellular field if it means the cubs stay at wrigley? should they make a deal with milwaukee instead? it is gonna cost more to rebuild wrigley as it will cost to start from scratch somewhere else. I would think fans would prefer a summer at the cell than driving to schaumburg.

Keep in mind that the Yankees tore down and built a new stadium during one off-season so if they are going to do major renovations or a complete rebuild they could do it during one off-season without needing to plan on playing games somewhere else.

Didnt they do it across the street like comiskey and the old land is parking? its different than trying to destroy and erect on the same land. all the footings would need to be dug up not just paved over for parking. its part of why it cost 1.5 billion dollars to build as well, the expedited costs of doing it over an offseason. Its probably easier to get the steel from overseas to the bronx than to downtown chicago

I'm sure they'll be spending a season at the Cell eventually. Renovations need to happen at Wrigley, and I doubt they can do it all in one offseason. I don't think watching them play there for a season would be such a bad thing. Better they do it now when they won't be winning a lot of games anyway, than a few years from now (I hope) they are a contending team again.
