Cubs Sign Gerardo ConcepcionCubs Sign Gerardo Concepcion
By Mark Polishuk [February 2, 2012 at 5:58pm CST] The Cubs have signed Cuban left-hander Gerardo Concepcion to a contract, reports Jorge Ebro of El Nuevo Herald (via Twitter). Concepcion is represented by Jaime Torres. Concepcion, 18, established residency in Mexico in mid-January and was declared a free agent last week. Several teams were interested in the young southpaw, including the Blue Jays, Giants, Phillies, Rangers, Red Sox, Royals, White Sox and Yankees. Torres recently said Concepcion had received as many as 10 contract offers. MLBtraderumors.com "The dead touch the living dreaming, who in turn touch the living waking" -Heraclitus
Re: Cubs Sign Gerardo ConcepcionSANTO DOMINGO -- Cuban left handed starter Gerardo Concepcion, an 18-year-old phenom who defected last June, has reached a $7 million guaranteed contract with the Chicago Cubs, a source close to the negotiation told ESPNdeportesLosAngeles.com.
According to the source, the deal is filled with incentives that could up the money to $8 million. The transaction will not be official until Concepcion passes a physical, the source added. Concepcion was the Rookie of the Year in the Cuban National Series in 2010-11. He had a 10-3 record with an ERA of 3.36 in 21 outings, 16 of which were starts, with the Industriales de la Habana. Concepcion left the Cuban National team at the World Port Tournament in Rotterdam, Holland -- the same tournament from which Aroldis Chapman defected to later sign a $30 million deal with the Cincinnati Reds. After establishing his residency in Mexico, Concepcion was declared a free agent by Major League Baseball and is now training in the Dominican Republic, where Cubs owner Tom Ricketts visited on Thursday to announce the construction of a new baseball academy and player development facility. Re: Cubs Sign Gerardo ConcepcionThere we go!! Theo Trio are starting their magic. I know not much has been said about this kid, but there is clear interest in the Cubs and signing Concepcion is a huge signing and I hope will lead the way for Cespedes and Soler.
Re: Cubs Sign Gerardo Concepcion
I'd take Soler over Cespedes, but this is a good start. Time to snag international players before the new CBA restrictions take effect. "The dead touch the living dreaming, who in turn touch the living waking" -Heraclitus
Re: Cubs Sign Gerardo ConcepcionNice! 1 down, 2 to go
Re: Cubs Sign Gerardo Concepcion
So right behind McNutt and in front of Maples territory. Farm is being built up! Last year you can throw massive money in IFA, so I dont mind this one bit.
Re: Cubs Sign Gerardo Concepcion
EXACTLY!! IF the Cubs are going to spend spend spend on IFA, this is the year to do it. I'm kind of indifferent on Cespedes (because of his age), but I wouldn't mind if the Cubs gave him 5-6 years but not a crazy bloated contract. Soler, in my opinion is the better route due to his age 19-20. I wouldn't mind all three. Any word on how many years for Concepcion? Re: Cubs Sign Gerardo ConcepcionLove it and for once I'm going to disagree with just about every scout. Everyone is saying back of the rotation, but a lefty with a plus curve, above average change and a fastball that can hit 92 has a higher ceiling than that. He took on the equivalent of A+ ball last year with a lot o success at age 18. Bring in Soler and trade Garza then suddenly the Cubs have a top 7 farm.
Re: Cubs Sign Gerardo Concepcioneh, major league contract for an 18 year old? He better progress fast. I don't care that they overpaid, but the ML Contract is questionable.
Re: Cubs Sign Gerardo Concepcion
I think the general consensus (which of course has been wrong before) is that Concepcion should move fast because he's very polished, but doesn't have above middle of the rotation upside because of only ok stuff. I'm betting he starts in Daytona in 2012 with the idea that he should split 2012 between High A and AA, and then spend most of 2013 in AAA before moving up to the Majors at the end of 2013 or to start 2014. Re: Cubs Sign Gerardo ConcepcionThinking ahead to Cespedes and most likely Soler, what IF the Cubs do sign them, as well -- who do they replace on the 40 man?
Re: Cubs Sign Gerardo ConcepcionFirst, I wouldn't be shocked if the Cubs (or whoever signs Soler) is more likely to offer him more money to avoid an MLB contract. While Concepcion is rumored to be very refined but not have as high of an upside, my understanding is that Soler is much less refined but has a higher ceiling. I think teams are fairly confident Concepcion will be pitching at the MLB level within 3 seasons. That probably could not be said about Soler.
- First, while I don't think this will happen, there are a few players on the 40 man I wouldn't be shocked to see sent to Boston as Theo compensation. The four most likely candidates would probably be Beliveau, Lake, Vitters and Clevenger. I don't think Boston would get more than 1 of them, but that would clear up a spot. - I also think there are a few pitchers we have that we could take off the 40 man relatively safely: Casey Weathers, Andy Sonnanstine and Casey Coleman come to mind first. We have that less so on the offensive side, although I'd probably bet on Campana being the most likely option if push came to shove. My Cubs blog: http://thecubsaddict.blogspot.com/
Re: Cubs Sign Gerardo ConcepcionConcepcion Tidbit
Seems basic for an 18 year old kid. Lots of unknowns, but you cant reap the rewards without trying.
Re: Cubs Sign Gerardo ConcepcionI see Concepcion as a 4 with potential #3 upside. He is really fucking young, so if he develops correctly, I don't see any reason to rule out a potential fringe #2 as he learns to deceive batters and honing his curve with a smart mix of pitches to keep guys guessing in the box.
Soler definitely has a very high upside, but it is going to take a while (3+ years) before he is really ready to contribute as a solid member on the MLB team. "The dead touch the living dreaming, who in turn touch the living waking" -Heraclitus
Re: Cubs Sign Gerardo ConcepcionColin Wyers @cwyers
I find myself wondering if the Cubs think Cardenas is better than DeWitt or just cheaper. People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring.

Re: Cubs Sign Gerardo ConcepcionNot that DeWitt sets the bar very high.

Re: Cubs Sign Gerardo ConcepcionPlaced on the 40 man, but sent to minor league camp
Re: Cubs Sign Gerardo ConcepcionI heard it was 5 years 20 million. they are just reporting the guaranteed money, but there is alot more than that he can be making. There are guaranteed bonus' of 3 million signing and three million spread out over the 5 years, but there is also base salaries in the deal.
