WOWWWW! Marlins Close To Acquiring Carlos Zambrano By Ben Nicholson-Smith [January 4, 2012 at 4:42pm CST]
The Marlins are close to acquiring Carlos Zambrano from the Cubs, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Zambrano would need to waive his no-trade clause, but he would presumably be open to playing for friend and fellow Venezuelan Ozzie Guillen.
The deal would give the Marlins a projected rotation of Josh Johnson, Mark Buehrle, Anibal Sanchez, Ricky Nolasco and Zambrano. Chris Volstad has started 29 games in each of the past three seasons, but he could become trade bait if the deal goes through.
It's not yet clear how the Cubs and Marlins would split Zambrano's salary. He will earn $18MM in 2012 and his contract includes an option for 2013 that could vest depending on his health and performance in 2012. He needs to finish in the top four in next year's Cy Young vote and finish the season healthy for the option to vest.
Zambrano, 30, posted a 4.82 ERA with 6.2 K/9, 3.5 BB/9 and a 42.4% ground ball rate in 145 2/3 innings for the Cubs in 2011. He has spent his entire 11-year career with the Cubs and earned nearly $100MM in the process. The Cubs signed him out of Venezuela in 1997.

The Marlins are going to be really good with this trade. They have a scary good rotation.

What do we care? During the time frame they'll have him we won't be contending so let them see if they can win with that basket case for a couple years while we're doin our little rebuild. I'm thinking by the time we're ready to go, they'll be sick of his shit too and will have already kicked his ass to the curb then we'll be the ones who come out smelling like roses. Besides, they probably thought that D-Lee for Choi trade was pretty good too, how'd that work for them?

If this reporter is accurate, then it looks like this is just a salary dump. Volstad and Dominguez both suck. Report: Cubs close to trading pitcher Carlos Zambrano to Miami Marlinsby Joe Capozzi If a report by Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports is accurate, the Marlins have found another starting pitcher. Carlos Zambrano is on the verge of getting dealt to the Miami Marlins, according to Rosenthal. Not sure yet who the Marlins would send to Chicago, but possible names include right-hander Chris Volstad and third-base prospect Matt Dominguez. Volstad seems a likely trade piece because he would displaced in the rotation by Zambrano, who would join ace Josh Johnson, newly-acquired Mark Buehrle, Ricky Nolasco and Anibal Sanchez in Miami. Speculation is that the Cubs would pick up a significant portion of Zambrano’s $18 million salary for 2012. He’s entering the final season of a five year, $88.5 million deal. Zambrano, 30, has a full no-trade clause with the Cubs, which imposed suspensions each of the past two seasons on the fiery pitcher. He is 125-81 record in 11 seasons with the Cubs. And he last pitched on Aug. 12, 2011, when he was ejected from a game at Atlanta after giving up five home runs. He then cleaned out his locker and left the team, and ultimately was suspended for the rest of the season. The deal would unite Zambrano with his friend and fellow Venezuelan, Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen. In fact, in 2010 Zambrano caught the ire of Cubs manager Lou Piniella for having dinner with Guillen the night after Zambrano erupted at his Cubs teammates in the dugout during an interleague game against the Sox. Guillen told reporters last month at the winter meetings that he often stays in touch with Zambrano via texting. But Guillen said at the time that the two did not discuss Zambrano joining the Marlins. “I got a bet with somebody, I will tell you, he will win a lot of games for the team,” Guillen said. On Tuesday, new Cubs general manager Theo Epstein strongly suggested that Zambrano was not a fit with the Cubs in 2012. “The Carlos Zambrano of 2011 and years previous can’t fit into the culture that we have here,” Epstein said in a radio interview. Marlins president David Samson, in his weekly radio show today with 790 The Ticket, wouldn’t confirm nor deny Miami’s interest in Zambrano. “Who? The Game 5 starter in ’03 (NLCS)? He’s pretty good. But he’s on the Cubs, though,” Samson said. http://blogs.palmbeachpost.com/marlins/ ... i-marlins/

Hopefully this goes down. Then I wont be forced to not root for a Chicago Cub. I haven't looked up Dominguez but people seemed hopefully...probably because Z will finally be gone.

Dominguez is all defense and can't hit a lick. If we could somehow combine him with Vitters, then we might have something.

6:15pm: Chris Volstad is joining the Cubs in the deal, according to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com (Twitter link). The 6'8" right-hander posted a 4.89 ERA with 6.4 K/9, 2.7 BB/9 and a 52.3% ground ball rate in 165 2/3 innings for the Marlins in 2011. His career numbers (4.59 ERA, 5.8 K/9, 3.1 BB/9, 50.4% ground ball rate) show he's a steady if unspectacular back-of-the-rotation option. However, he's homer prone and struggles against left-handers, as MLBTR's Mike Axisa pointed out earlier in the offseason.
The 25-year-old former first rounder projects to earn $2.6MM through arbitration in 2012 and will remain under team control through 2014, which makes him a relatively affordable medium-term option. 4:42pm: The 2012 Marlins are about to get a little more interesting. In case Ozzie Guillen, Jose Reyes, Mark Buehrle and Heath Bell don’t add enough intrigue to the upcoming season, the team is close to acquiring Carlos Zambrano from the Cubs, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. The move would round out Miami’s rotation and provide the Cubs with the chance to part ways with a volatile but talented player who was no longer welcome in Chicago. Zambrano would need to waive his no-trade clause for the teams to complete the deal, but he would presumably be open to playing for friend and fellow Venezuelan Ozzie Guillen. Zambrano and Guillen reportedly discussed the possibility after the 2011 season. Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein had a productive meeting with Zambrano after the season, but the right-hander hasn't seemed wanted in Chicago for a while. The Cubs placed Zambrano on the disqualified list last summer following an August outburst and declined to play him in September, after his 30-day suspension ended. The deal would give the Marlins a projected rotation of Buehrle, Josh Johnson, Anibal Sanchez, Ricky Nolasco and Zambrano. The deal would presumably take the Marlins out of the running for another Cubs starter: right-hander Matt Garza. The Cubs will take on much of Zambrano's salary and are "not expecting to receive much back in the way of prospects," David Kaplan of CSNChicago.com writes. Zambrano, a three-time Silver Slugger, owns a .241/.251/.395 career line as a hitter and has hit 23 home runs. The Cubs signed him out of Venezuela in 1997 under former GM Ed Lynch. The Marlins have a full 40-man roster and would have to clear space for Zambrano unless they're sending a player from their 40-man to Chicago. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/01/m ... rano-.html

It's a salary dump, plain and simple. Volstad is nothing.

A salary dump that is necessary trip. Another bad Hendry contract partially out of here and Volstad isn't as bad as you think he is. If we keep Garza we'll have a poor man's 1-2-3 punch in him, Demp and Volstad. Let's face it pitching-wise we'd get more out of Volstad than Zambrano

I was being VERY hopeful LoMo would be included. This isn't even a salary dump. The Cubs are taking on all of the salary minus the league minimum...then they're taking on just over $2M for Volstad...so they're taking ok salary. I'm assuming they'd have control over Volstad for more than 2012.

Cubs paying $15M to $16M of Z's contract, according to Brucccce. Still not seeing how this is a salary dump. To me, simply an addition by subtraction.

This move was simply made to get rid of Zambrano. Nothing more. Do you guys really think that the Cubs want Volstad? Hell no. He's the poor man's Randy Wells. If that.
Cubs are trying to get rid of all the garbage so they can clean up and start a fresh.
