San Diego Chargers defensive coordinator Ron Rivera has been doing his homework on Mike Martz, and the study sessions have given him pause about Martz's first game as the Chicago Bears offensive coordinator on Saturday. "We went back and we watched Coach Martz's offense and things he had done in the past," Rivera said Friday on "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on ESPN 1000. "We looked at some [film] later on San Francisco stuff where they started to get explosive down the end of the 2008 season. "Really saw some things that were, I don't want to say scary, but it causes a little bit of concern because of how they attacked vertically." Rivera, who was the Bears' defensive coordinator from 2004 to 2006, understands the danger of attacking the wide-open system. "If you're playing coverage, you got to be over the top of everybody because if the quarterback hits the guy running down the seam, it's going to be a big play," he said. "If you bring pressure, you got to make sure somebody is running with everybody else, or it's a big play. There is some concern because its an explosive offense." Rivera is more familiar with Bears quarterback Jay Cutler, who played for the Denver Broncos before joining the Bears last season. "A few years ago we were playing against Jay Cutler, who we thought, and I still think is a young, dynamic quarterback because he's got a live arm, he's athletic and mobile," Rivera said. Rivera is glad to see the return of linebacker Brian Urlacher, who led Rivera's defense to Super Bowl XLI. "Brian is good young man," Rivera said. "I hope he does come back, has a great season and I hope he is a Pro Bowl player. "Brian is a different kind of animal there. He's a big athletic, physical player. He's also a very smart player." http://sports.espn.go.com/chicago/nfl/n ... id=5461628

I could be mistaken but I thought Riveras contract expired and after several HC interviews he signed with the Charges as a DC. Like I said I could be wrong but I dont think he was fired

You are correct. The Bears defense’s success earned Rivera recognition among franchises looking for new head coaches. The Arizona Cardinals and Pittsburgh Steelers interviewed him in January 2007. He was a candidate for the vacant Dallas Cowboys head coaching position, a job that ultimately went to San Diego Chargers defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. Rivera was named as a potential candidate to replace the fired Marty Schottenheimer in San Diego, but the job was filled by Norv Turner, the brother of fellow offensive coordinator, Ron Turner, Rivera's offensive counterpart in Chicago. After the announcement, ESPN reported that the Bears were considering letting Rivera go. This came after several other teams interviewed him, and the negotiations between his representatives and the Bears were making little progress. On February 19, 2007, it was announced that Ron Rivera's contract with the Bears would not be renewed.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ron_Rivera

But look at our defense after Rivera left! It has seriously sucked donkey nuts. It could have been renewed, we could have offered him a new contract but we chose not to because of LOVIE.

I understand what he is saying and I agree to a certain extent. I just don't think Rivera is the only reason our defense isnt what it use to be.
The last half of the 06 season our defense started to show signs of sucking, minus a few games. After Brown was lost for the season we couldnt stop the run and if I remember correctly the number of turnovers we created decreased quite a bit. Then throw in Harris' knee injury, Vashers chronic leg injuries, Mark Andersons pass rush disappearance, the loss of one of our best D lineman (Tank Johnson), and then throw in poor drafting, poor trades and poor free agent signing we have the very average possibly below average defense we have today. Oh yeah they are getting old too
