Bears looking for a veteran backupWho's the guy you'd like to see backup Hanie while Cutler is out?
Re: Bears looking for a veteran backupWe need someone mobile. Favre (not that its realistic) and Bulger would get destroyed behind this offensive line. I'm cool with Jeff Garcia. I know hes more of a west coast system guy, but he could be the guy for the job.
Re: Bears looking for a veteran backupNathan Enderle. I'm not so sure Enderle would do a worse job than a backup QB that hasn't played all season, let alone possibly for more than a year. Besides, if the Bears get down to their third string QB, it's over. I'm confident with Hanie, but it ends there.
Re: Bears looking for a veteran backup
Pretty much my thoughts as well. It's week 12, it's not like there's going to be a very effective QB sitting by the phone. Enderle has at least been in the meetings and practices, so will have some familiarity with the system, but if it comes to that, the season's shot.
Re: Bears looking for a veteran backupIt has to be someone who knows the Martz offense, otherwise he's basically useless.

Re: Bears looking for a veteran backupInteresting. Hmmmm, the story took the words out of my mouth.
Re: Bears looking for a veteran backupIt would be nice to have Kyle Neckbeard Orton back, but I still say we have to have someone who knows the Martz offense.

Re: Bears looking for a veteran backup
I agree. I'm staying on my Hanie+Enderle bandwagon.
Kyle Orton waivedBroncos just waived him....interesting. Gotta wonder who else would be interested in claiming him?

Re: Kyle Orton waivedAlready mentioned in the Bears backup thread. This should be combined.
Re: Bears looking for a veteran backup
hmmmmm
Re: Bears looking for a veteran backupBears are 30th in the waiver order, not gunna happen.
Orton will either be a Chief, Texan, or Dolphin. Doubtful he makes it to Chicago. North Korea is the country the monkeys from Wizard of Oz came from
Re: Bears looking for a veteran backup
And who is that that's still in the league? The only QB's available I can think of off the top of my head are Bulger and Warner and they're both firmly retired. Jon Kitna and Alex Smith both played under him but are currently on rosters. Any vet available outside of Orton would take a few weeks minimum to get back into playing shape probably as well. I don't think Orton is a bad option as a 2nd or 3rd string.
Re: Bears looking for a veteran backupJay Glazer reporting that the Chiefs and Bears will put in a claim. Chiefs will obviously get him if thats the case.
Re: Bears looking for a veteran backupWould be pretty surprised if Texans don't go after him too. #1 defense in yards allowed, #2 in points, tied for 9th in takeaways. #2 in rushing yards per game. And one of the best receivers in the NFL in Andre Johnson. They just need an average QB who won't make mistakes and at least gives them the threat of a passing game, and Orton does both of those. Not sure Leinart does either.

Re: Bears looking for a veteran backupI'm hearing that the Bears WON'T put in a claim for him, since they're 30th team. Only the 49'ers and Packers would follow, and neither are likely to put a claim in. If Orton clears waivers, then the Bears, who Orton's agent has said that Orton would like to return to, can negotiate a cheaper deal with him, instead of having to pay the $2.5M still left on this year's deal.
Re: Bears looking for a veteran backup
That's the best way to do it. That was the risk Denver took by putting him on waivers, hoping someone would pick up the rest of the contract. Let him hit the open market (if he does) and grab him for the prorated minimum.

Re: Bears looking for a veteran backupLet's just hope Hanie stays healthy.
