Damn. As a Packer fan I wanted him in charge forever.

I'm assuming they are going to clean house? Poor Cutler, I could see them bringing in an offensive mind and him having to learn another system.

This is excellent news. Wonder if the Polian shake up in Indy had anything to do with this? I understand injuries can derail a season, but to be that ill prepared for them falls on the GM.

Speaking of the Polians though, what do you all think about bringing them in? Granted they suffered the same sort of failure to adjust to one key injury, but they've had an exceptional track record of success over the last decade as well as with Buffalo in the early '90's and Carolina when they started.

And even when they do something right, the organization screws up. JD just said on Waddle and Silvey everyone's running around Halas like chickens with their heads cup off. No press release. No press conference. Just an all around poorly run organization.

They need to clean house and bring in someone who knows what they are doing and instills that organization from the top down. Too bad the Packers took Murphy right from under the Bears noses.

There's so many parallels between the Cubs and Bears right now its crazy. I do think both are moving in the right direction, but the Bears are much more likely to mess this up.

I still think a lot of people are overvaluing the Bears as a team. I know they had a great record last year, but everyone outside of Bears fans was talking about how they were a bounce or two away from being out of the playoffs. This team just isn't very talented outside of Forte, Cutler, Hester, Peppers, and Urlacher (with of course a few more) when compared with the upper level teams in the NFC.

Their defense is constructed around one player who if he loses a step to age or gets injured they are screwed. Their offense is structured around one player who if he gets injured or leaves to FA they are screwed. More and more we are seeing thats not the way to construct a team. The Packers, for example, have the best player in the league on their offense. If he went down, I still see them making the playoffs with Flynn. Its a drop off, but there is no one player who is completely indispensable or who accounts for an overly significant chunk of their offense.

For a team like the Bears, when it goes well (last year) it goes well. But the possibility for failure is much higher.

Chicago Bears general manager Jerry Angelo was relieved of his duties on Tuesday, the team announced.

The team released a statement that Bears CEO Ted Phillips informed Angelo of his decision on Tuesday morning. There will be a news conference at 5 p.m. ET.

Angelo just finished his 11th year as the Bears GM. The team started this season 7-3, but injuries to quarterback Jay Cutler and running back Matt Forte led to a five-game losing streak. The Bears closed the season with a win over the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday to finish 8-8.

Rookie offensive tackle Gabe Carimi, who was Angelo's first-round pick, also went down with a knee injury in Week 2.

Injuries weren't the Bears' only problem this season as special teams performer Sam Hurd was arrested on federal drug charges.

Hurd was one of three former Dallas Cowboys whom Angelo brought over in the offseason, but none proved very effective. Roy Williams was brought in to be the big receiver Angelo has been criticized for not acquiring, but Williams had just 37 catches and two touchdowns.

The Bears reached Super Bowl XLI and advanced to the NFC Championship Game last season under Angelo.

It's uncertain whether this move will affect head coach Lovie Smith, who was given a two-year extension in February, 2011.

4 pm Presser. Lovie will stay, so I wonder if they have someone in mind that they have already talked to.

I have a few requirements here.

1. Keep Lovie Smith. He's a good coach. He did a lot with mediocre talent and looks at what he's done here: 2 NFC Title games and 1 SB appearance. Multiple playoffs appearances. The players love him.

2. DO NOT HIRE SOMEONE FROM INSIDE! Go out and find the Theo Epstein-esque equivalent in the NFL.

3. Clean house in the front office. Start over with guys know what they're doing.

4. The McCaskeys need to fire Ted Phillips. This was a scapegoat move to keep his job. Nobody is going to touch him and he's an absolute idiot.

I'm sure this is what will end up happening, but I don't think this defense will be very successful as Urlacher slows down. Can Lovie adjust? Considering he is still implementing a much older and out of style defensive scheme I'm not so sure. Then, after that Lovie needs to hire someone who can coach the offense since he doesn't touch it. Martz was a terrible fit, so I don't know how confident I would be in his ability to hire an offensive mind.

I do think the talent level on this team will improve in the next 3 years. I don't really see them being more successful though when compared to the direction of other teams in the division.

I'd rather have us build up a team again for the long run and by the time the Packers and Lions are done in 4-6 years we'll be a ready to come in and take the division again.

Kinda like what the Lions did while everyone else dominated the NFC North.

And I think Martz is the perfect fit right now. No coordinator would want to come in to the Bears' situation right now. Where everyone could be fired within a year or two.

They need to get someone with a proven history of successful draft records. Both pinpointing players with talent, and at positions of need for the organization - not scheme. Quit drafting these fucking safeties for the Tampa 2 - it doesn't work. They need to realize that Urlacher is soon to be done, and there is nothing to replace him. Go out and sign a FA WR, because you have QB/RB in place and need to get someone there to help them NOW - not a project from the draft. Make the draft picks around the depth needs (DT, LB, CB, QB) - not around needing a fucking safety to help urlacher in the Tampa 2 scheme. Been there, done that (multiple times) and it's never worked. Angelo keeps dreaming of the days we had a healthy Harris and Brown, and this defense was dominate. Those days are gone, draft for depth so the TEAM can pitch in - not just pro bowlers.

Get someone that can evaluate talent. Period.

I'd take the Polians and keep Lovie... Lovie gets way too much crap considering what he has done for this team

Never should have stopped working for the Bears after two years there. I could've done wonders within the organization.

Word. As a recovering Lovie hater, I've grown to respect and like him, and I hope he's a part of the Bears going forward.

Get the Polian's in here, ASAP. They've proven to not only pinpoint the correct draft-day choices, but have gotten talent from players in FA without spending the big $$$.

Bring in both of the Polians and this offseason is the most successful of my lifetime.

Lovie stays, without a doubt. Honestly speaking, he's too expensive to let go now. Beyond that, he's a decent coach and is very well liked and respected by his players. In no way do I think he will go.

Although I'll sound like a homer, I feel like we can question how much better of a coach Lovie would be if he was able to field skill players at skill positions. Seriously, IF the Bears GM could draft at least one good player per draft, Lovie would have a much better team.

A GM that can draft talent and the best talent available is what this organization needs. If the Bears were to develop a surplus at one position, that means another team has a shortage and with that need, the Bears have bargaining power to complete a trade. I don't know, it seems so elementary to me about what needs to be done.....yet Angelo was an idiot about it.

Gosh, do we even need to bring up the issue about the botched trade on draft day with the Baltimore Ravens? That was NOT received very well around the league.

Clean house in the front office first. Nobody from the Angelo regime should be there. Then get a GM that has the right mind set and can scout and draft well.

Keep this coaching staff. Lovie and his guys are doing a marvelous job.

The perception of us on draft day will fade away now that Angelo's goofy ass is gone.

My only concern is that Ted Phillips is equally a problem as Angelo was. He'll probably hire Ruskell as the new GM. That scares the hell out of me.

Mike Martz is not coming back either. He announced he is not returning.

Now we need a GM and OC. Get ready Jay, another offensive system to learn.

This doesn't need its own thread.
