RIP Joe Paterno

What an unfortunate ending to his life. A very sad day in the sports world.

Not a surprise really though. Said a year or two ago that once Paterno retires, I wouldn't be surprised at all to see him pass shortly after. Sucks that it is likely to come right after the scandal when it is fresh in everybody's mind, and what they think of him currently, but over time he'll be remembered more for his whole career, not just the end.

i always said JoePa would die withing 6 months of not coaching football anymore. Just figured he would have stopped coaching on his own terms.
You look like Babe Ruth's gay brother, Gabe Ruth.

When you're doing something for such a long time (especially something you love and are passionate about) when its time to finally leave it its a huge shock and vacuum. Those people deteriorate very quickly.

Sometimes, keeping yourself occupied and doing something keeps a man going. Without it, he has nothing to live for.

Its just sad how it ended for him. Definitely not how he wanted it. His legacy tarnished and his good name ruined by an asshole who wanted to sexually assault kids.

Sad, it really is. All he did for PSU, all the lives he helped re-shape both children and adults and he'll be remembered for something that he was not directly involved with. Thats whats wrong with todays "what have you done/not done for me lately" society. I don't want to get all religious but given what he did for so many people and what happened right before he died I wonder which way hes headed?

God isn't real, so the last question is moot.

Memory will fade and he will be remembered as one of the best coaches of all time.

Remember when Reggie White's church had that scandal about misappropriated money?

What? He got lung cancer. He would have died had he still been coaching, and was about to enter his 7,683rd season at head coach of Penn St. This had nothing to do with him dying just because he wasn't coaching anymore. He was a 100 year old dude who got cancer for crying out loud. That cancer was coming whether he was coaching college football or not.

Also, you don't get a pass just because you were a good person for 99% of your life. When you do something as despicable as he did at the end, yeah, you deserve to be remembered for just that, and he will.

I think coaching kept him going, kept his spirits up and made him fight harder. He had something to live for. Once this scandal happened and he got released of his duties as a HC, he threw in the towel.

I think he could have prolonged his life somewhat, had he kept coaching. Its the will/spirit that got shattered.

Fighting cancer is all about spirit. They can pump anyone full of drugs. If you don't want to fight its just a matter of time.
