I have to admit, I haven't watched a dunk contest since the days of Dominique Wilkins, Dee Brown, Spud Webb, and Cedric Caballos. I watched last night to see Blake Griffin, and was impressed, but two things about the dunk contest bugged me:
1. I wonder if the contest itself has jumped the shark, so to speak. It seemed to be more about theatrics than actual dunking ability. Some of the best dunks I saw last night were free of the extra flair of stuffed toys on the rim, cars, choirs, etc. I honestly think Javale McGee was more impressive than Blake Griffin, but because Griffin put on a better show in the final round, he gets it.
2. The "voting." Maybe I'm overly skeptical, but is there any way they actually counted online and text-in votes? It seemed awfully fast to be able to actually count online and text-in votes. Maybe I'm underestimating the technology, but it smelled fishy to me.
